Restorative dentistry
Root Canal Treatment in Albania

Understand the treatment
What root canal treatment is
Inside every tooth runs a small chamber of nerve and blood vessels — the pulp. When deep decay, a crack or trauma lets bacteria reach it, the pulp becomes inflamed and then infected, producing the throbbing, sleep-stealing pain root canals are famous for. The treatment removes the infected tissue, disinfects the canal system, and seals it — keeping your natural tooth where an extraction would leave a gap.
Modern root canal treatment under proper local anaesthesia feels much like a long filling appointment. The agony people associate with the phrase is the toothache before treatment — not the treatment itself, which is what ends it.
Why saving the tooth matters
A root-treated natural tooth preserves your bite, your bone and your budget. Extraction may look cheaper on the day, but the empty space invites neighbouring teeth to drift, bone to shrink, and eventually an implant plus crown to be needed anyway. When a tooth is genuinely saveable, saving it is nearly always the economical decision over ten years — and when it is not saveable, we say that instead.
- Infected pulp
- Cleaned and sealed canals

Is this you?
Save it or replace it?
Root canal treatment when…
- Deep decay or a crack has reached the nerve
- A tooth is dark, painful to heat, or aching spontaneously
- An abscess has formed but the tooth structure is restorable
- A previously treated canal has reinfected and is retreatable
Extraction may be wiser when…4
- The tooth is fractured below the gumline or split vertically
- Too little sound structure remains to rebuild after treatment
- Severe gum disease has already loosened the tooth
- Repeated retreatments have failed — an implant may serve you better
Candidacy is always confirmed by the dental team through a review of your photos and X-rays — this list is general guidance, not a diagnosis.
Gains and trade-offs
Benefits and honest limitations
Benefits
- Ends the pain by removing its source
- Keeps your natural tooth, bite and bone
- Usually far less than the cost of extraction plus implant
- High success rates for first-time treatments
Limitations
- Success is high but not guaranteed — a minority of cases reinfect and need retreatment
- A root-treated tooth becomes more brittle and usually needs a crown
- Complex canal anatomy can require a second appointment
- A tooth beyond saving should be extracted, not heroically retreated forever
Procedure
Root canal treatment, step by step
-

Diagnosis & X-ray
The affected tooth and its root anatomy are mapped; the save-or-extract question is answered honestly.
-

Anaesthesia & isolation
Profound local anaesthesia; the tooth is isolated to keep the canal system sterile.
-

Cleaning the canals
Infected pulp is removed and each canal is shaped and disinfected.
-

Sealing
The disinfected canals are filled and sealed to keep bacteria out permanently.
-

Rebuilding the tooth
A core rebuild — with a fiber post where needed — and usually a crown to protect the now-brittle tooth.

After treatment
Recovery
-
Tenderness on biting for a few days is normal as the tissues around the root settle.
-
The pre-treatment toothache typically vanishes immediately — that pain came from the infection.
-
Avoid chewing hard food on the tooth until its final restoration or crown is placed.
Risks, honestly
First-time root canal treatments enjoy high published success rates, but no endodontic treatment carries a guarantee: canal anatomy can hide branches, and a sealed tooth can occasionally reinfect years later, needing retreatment or, ultimately, extraction. A treated tooth also becomes more brittle — skipping the protective crown to save money is the most common way patients turn a saved tooth into a lost one. We will always tell you when a tooth is not worth treating; heroics on hopeless teeth serve the invoice, not the patient.
Questions
Root canal — frequently asked questions

Ask a coordinator in your language. Send a photo if it helps: a person answers, usually within 24 hours.
Chat on WhatsAppIs a root canal painful?
The treatment is done under profound local anaesthesia and typically feels like a long filling. The legendary pain belongs to the untreated infection — treatment is what ends it, usually the same day.
How many visits does it take?
Simple cases finish in one appointment; complex anatomy or heavy infection sometimes needs two. Both fit comfortably within a normal Tirana stay.
Do I really need a crown afterwards?
For back teeth, almost always. A root-treated tooth is more brittle, and chewing forces crack unprotected ones. The crown is not an upsell — it is how the saved tooth stays saved.
Can a root canal fail?
A minority do, sometimes years later, if hidden canal branches harbour bacteria or a new leak develops. Retreatment often succeeds; when it will not, we say so and discuss an implant honestly.
Root canal or extraction — which is cheaper?
On the day, extraction. Over ten years, usually the root canal — because the extraction site typically ends up needing an implant and crown to restore function. We quote both paths when the decision is genuinely open.
My tooth turned dark after an old root canal. Options?
Internal whitening, a ceramic crown or a veneer, depending on the tooth. Send a photo — this is a very solvable problem.
